Congressional recess begins; Farm Bill doesn't
Congress headed into its August recess with no 2013 Farm Bill in sight. And, any possibility a Farm Bill could contain both farm and nutrition programs likely suffered a major setback when House Republicans announced they’ll seek a $40-billion, 10-year cut in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. That's double the reduction in the original House version of the Farm Bill, and 10 times more than the Senate reduction in its Farm Bill proposal.
Speaking with DairyBusiness Radio’s Bill Baker, National Milk Producers Federation’s (NMPF) Chris Galen said hope for a new Farm Bill before the current extension expires on Sept. 30 is fading. He urged dairy producers to contact their congressional representatives during the 5-week recess to call for Farm Bill and dairy reform passage. Congress returns Sept. 9.
