Countdown to World Dairy Expo #7: The Center of the Dairy Universe

By Dave Natzke

Your definition of the “center of the universe”  probably depends on whether you view things through the lens of astronomy, religion or psychology. When it comes to dairy, however, there’s little deviation: The “Center of the Dairy Universe” is World Dairy Expo.

You won’t need a spaceship – but a GPS and smartphone might help – as you prepare to journey to the 2013 World Dairy Expo, set for Oct. 1-5 at the Alliant Energy Center, Madison, Wis. To help serve as your guide, DairyBusiness Weekly begins a seven-week “Countdown to World Dairy Expo,” highlighting some of the major events and activities.

Fueled by camaraderie, some friendly competition and a universal interest in dairy, more than 70,000 people make the pilgrimage each year. They’re pulled by the attraction of out-of-this world dairy cattle, cutting-edge information, the largest dairy-focused trade show on the planet (and perhaps a grilled cheese sandwich and some ice cream).

Companions on the journey include people from 95 countries representing every corner of the globe: dairy producers, industry partners, researchers, students, and people who just love cows. A trip to World Dairy Expo is a great option for a family trip, or an incentive for employees.

And, even if you don’t purchase a genetics upgrade for your dairy herd at one of six dairy cattle breed sales, you’ll certainly pick up some production and management ideas to help improve the bottom line of your dairy business. Take a stroll down five miles of aisle in the trade show, featuring equipment, products and services from more than 850 companies and nearly 30 countries. Then, sit back in a comfortable padded seat in the Coliseum (no seat belt required) and compare your placings and reasons with the 16 judges who will rank the 2,500 dairy cattle exhibited on the famous colored shavings, all in search of the next  Supreme Champion.

There will be plenty to see and experience, new things to learn and memories to create. Admission is $10 daily or $30 for a season pass, parking included. The trade show is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
