This week in DairyProfit Weekly: Oct. 8, 2012

This week in DairyProfit Weekly:

1) Policy differences ‘Expo’sed: Debate over dairy policy and politics moved to World Dairy Expo, where U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack, leaders of the National Milk Producers Federation and members of the Dairy Business Association urged different platforms for change.

2) DPW Trends: September prices for federal order and California manufacturing classes of milk were up from August, but still less than September 2011 and average year-to-date (Y-T-D). Summer chocolate milk sales rose significantly, coinciding with efforts to promote it as an after-workout sports recovery drink during the 2012 Summer Olympics.

3) DPW Numbers: August 2012 U.S. milk production was down from a year earlier, but a greater portion went into the cheese vats, based on latest USDA dairy product estimates.

4) DPW Industry: UW-Madison’s Center for Dairy Research was awarded a $1 million U.S. Department of Commerce “i6 Challenge” grant to support efforts to commercialize research ideas that will positively impact economic development.

5) DPW Washington: Kicking off October as National Cooperative Month, USDA released its annual list of the nation’s 100 largest agricultural cooperatives, based on 2011 revenues. Among the top 100, 22 were dairy co-ops. Where does yours rank?
