It’s not too late to register this week to attend the Center for Dairy Excellence annual “Open House” events happening Tuesday, July 15 and Wednesday, July 16, in Fulton and Northumberland Counties, PA.

This year’s “Open House” series will showcase two multi-generational operations focusing on herd performance and cow comfort. During each Open House, you’ll have the opportunity to tour the facilities and see recent innovations.

“Dairy farmers agree they learn and gain the most when visiting other dairy farms,” said John Frey, executive director of the Center for Dairy Excellence. “It can be an excellent opportunity for them to see different ways to do things and incorporate new best management practices to improve herd performance and productivity.”

Both farm families hosting the events have recently updated facilities and have well developed business plans and best management practices to help them achieve their goals. The Open Houses are free and will be held from 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., with a picnic-style lunch.

Dates and locations include:

·  TUESDAY, JULY 15 Misty Mountain Dairy LLC., Owned by the Mosemann Family, 843 Spring Road, Warfordsburg, Fulton County.

·  WEDNESDAY, JULY 16 Lloyd B. Zimmerman & Sons, Owned by the Zimmerman Family, 2413 Snydertown Road, Danville, Northumberland County

Misty Meadow Dairy is a family partnership between Mark and Lauren Mosemann, Mark’s father Richard Mosemann, and his brother Scott Mosemann. The family milks 350 cows in a double-8 herringbone parlor recently renovated from a swing 16. Scott serves as herdsperson for the operation, while Mark oversees general farm operations and cropping. Lauren manages heifers and calves, and Richard oversees finances.

Lloyd B. Zimmerman & Sons involves father Lloyd and sons Merle and Nevin. They milk 360 cows in a brand-new double-16 parallel parlor. Merle serves as the herdsperson for the operation, while Lloyd and Nevin manage crops and maintenance work for the farm.

Those who are participating in AgChoice Farm Credit’s SmartStart program are eligible to receive 1.0 credit for attending either of the center’s “Open House” events.
