USDA to purchase 200,000 lbs. of ‘Greek’ yogurt for school pilot
USDA announced the purchase of nearly 200,000 lbs. of high-protein yogurt from Chobani as part of a new pilot program for schools in four states. The strawberry, vanilla, blueberry and plain yogurt will be delivered between September and November 2013. The total contract is worth $279,720 ($1.40/lb.)
USDA’s Farm Service Agency previously invited processor bids to supply high-protein “Greek” yogurt for schools in New York, Arizona, Idaho and Tennessee. The pilot stems from a request last year by U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and other members of Congress to consider adding “Greek” yogurt to the USDA list of foods state agencies can order with USDA food entitlement funds, including those used for the National School Lunch Program.
