Land O’Lakes to CDFA: Hold a hearing

With no response to a petition filed by dairy producer organizations on July 22, Land O’Lakes general counsel and chief administrative officer Peter Janzen sent a letter to California Department of Food & Agriculture (CDFA) Secretary Karen Ross, urging the agency to grant a hearing request on milk pricing in the state.
In the letter, Janzen expressed concern over the widening gap between California’s Class 4b price and the federal order Class III price. He said CDFA’s own data showed
dairy producers’ cost of production continues to exceed the California statewide blend price, with a significant long-term impact on the California dairy industry.
Four California dairy producers organizations  – Western United Dairymen (WUD), California Dairies, Inc. (CDI), Milk Producers Council (MPC) and California Dairy Campaign (CDC) – submitted the petition for a hearing to consider implementation of a pricing deal negotiated by the California Legislature, producer and processor organizations.  The petition is posted on the CDFA “hearing matrix” website (www.cdfa.ca.gov/dairy/uploader/postings/petitions/).
