May dairy products report: More cheese
May 2013 U.S. milk production was up 0.9% compared to a year ago, and more of it went into the cheese vat, according to USDA’s monthly Dairy Products report, issued July 3. May 2013 dairy product output, compared to May 2012 and year-to-date (Y-T-D) estimates included:
• Total cheese: 953.9 million lbs., up 3.9%; Y-T-D 4.631 billion lbs., up 1.8%.
• Total Italian cheese: 402.2 million lbs., up 2.7%; Y-T-D 1.974 billion lbs., up 0.7%.
• Mozzarella: 315.4 million lbs., up 3.1%; Y-T-D 1.536 billion lbs., up 0.4%.
• American-type cheese: 389.4 million lbs., up 5.9%; Y-T-D 1.874 billion lbs., up 2.9%.
• Cheddar: 283.8 million lbs., up 5.7%; Y-T-D 1.379 billion lbs., up 3.5%.
• Butter: 166.6 million lbs., up 1.5%; Y-T-D 877.4 million lbs., up 1.7%.
• Dry milk powders – Nonfat dry milk, human, 167.4 million lbs., down 13.4%, Y-T-D 758.3 million lbs., down 15.4%; and skim milk powders, 54.6 million lbs., up 272%, Y-T-D 233.1 million lbs., up 121%.
• Dry whey (total): 78.0 million lbs., down 10.0%; Y-T-D 410.6 million lbs., down 7.6%.
• Yogurt: 391.3 million lbs., up 6.4%; Y-T-D 1.943 billion lbs., up 4.0%.
