Registered Holstein Leader Horace Backus Dies at 96

Horace A. Backus of Mexico, New York.

Horace A. Backus, 96, of Mexico, N.Y., often called the “Dean of Holstein Pedigrees”, passed peacefully in his sleep early on October 22 after several years of declining health. He spent his long career working with Registered Holsteins as a breeder, auction sale manager, author and organizational leader. Honored by Holstein Association USA and National Dairy Shrine, he was considered a friend and adviser by literally thousands of dairy breeders and industry leaders nationally and internationally.

Funeral arrangements in Mexico, N.Y. include calling hours from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Monday, October 28 at the Harter Funeral Home and services on Tuesday, October 29 at 1 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church.
