Interns Contribute to CDCB R&D Priorities

This summer, CDCB sponsored two interns, marking the seventh year of CDCB’s intern program designed to support talent development in dairy data and genetics. Jonathan Layton completed the initial analysis of the available CattleEye mobility scores, hoof health and other relevant data collected through the CDCB-University of Minnesota project. After navigating over 1.1 million CattleEye scores, Layton’s initial analysis affirmed reliability of the lameness scoring system. Next, CDCB will expand on this analysis through comprehensive statistical evaluation, genetic parameter analysis and distribution of results. Joe-Menwer Tabet evaluated the potential bias of reliabilities concerning the use of crossbred daughters in the evaluation of bulls. This project arose through industry discussion about potential effects of crossbred daughters leading to an over- or under-estimation of their sire’s reliability. Through the study of 8,038 Holstein and 1,071 Jersey bulls, Tabet’s results showed no significant differences in the change of PTAs across breeds, and the Standard Deviations showed similar pattern of variation. The similarity in both breeds could indicate that the reliability is not affected. More detailed results will be shared in October through the CDCB Activity Report and CDCB Connection. CDCB thanks Jonathan and Joe-Menwer for their excellent contributions to these CDCB priorities, advancing our knowledge and confidence in the evaluation system and traits of the future.
