The day’s first speaker was retired University of Delaware Professor David R. Legates from the Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation. His topic, ‘How will Climate Change Affect Agriculture?’, was a deep dive into actual climate data and how environmental extremism is causing problems for the American farmer and overall global food security. Legates has testified three times as an expert witness before the US Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works and before Pennsylvania House and Senate Committee meetings on climate change. He participated in the historic joint USA-USSR protocol for the exchange of climate information in 1990, won the 2002 Boeing Autometric Award for the Best Paper in Image Analysis and Interpretation by the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, won First Place in the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and ESRI Paper Competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and was awarded the Courage in Defense of Science Award in 2015.
The second speaker, Rob Gordon, is an expert on conservation and environmental policies focusing on wildlife and habitat, particularly endangered species. His topic, ‘The Endangered Species Act,’ addressed the contradictions and challenges we face when legislators don’t use actual data when creating policy. With a prolific writing career spanning articles in publications like Congressional Quarterly and the National Review, Gordon has testified before Congress on multiple occasions and provided commentary to major media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal. Rob’s extensive government experience includes roles in the USGS and the House Natural Resources Committee, where he played key roles in shaping environmental legislation.
The day’s final presentation was a panel discussion moderated by AAW President Rose Tryon on the topic ‘How Policy Affects Real Lives.’ Three panelists were Mindy Patterson, President and Co-Founder of The Cavalry Group LLC., Debbie Bacigalupi, a Californian cattle rancher and international speaker, and Chrissy Wozniak, host of the podcast North American Ag Spotlight. Each panelist shared stories of how bad policy has affected their lives and how they have fought back and embraced a warrior mindset.
Tailored for women in rural communities, agriculture, and agribusiness, this program fosters authentic growth by addressing and overcoming limiting beliefs and behaviors. Through an 18-month journey, participants evolve into resilient and impactful leaders for American Agri-Women and the broader agricultural landscape.
