DFA Statement on Section 338 Tariffs

The Trump Administration has announced a three-day pause on the Section 338 tariffs that were slated to go into effect on August 19 on certain imports from Canada, including dairy products.

“IDFA appreciates the Trump administration’s continued focus on ensuring that U.S. dairy farmers, processors and exporters receive the market access promised under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, including through fair and transparent administration of Canada’s dairy tariff-rate quotas.

We believe a strong and enforceable USMCA is essential to the growth of North American dairy trade and we are encouraged that U.S. and Canadian officials are re-engaging to address longstanding U.S. concerns with Canada’s dairy policies.

This announcement provides additional time for the United States and Canada to reach meaningful solutions to these issues. We urge continued efforts to address Canada’s dairy pricing policies and ensuring U.S. exporters receive the full market access envisioned in the USMCA. We encourage U.S. negotiators to secure concrete commitments from Canada and will continue supporting efforts to achieve a fair, balanced and enforceable agreement that delivers the market access promised to U.S dairy farmers, processors and exporters.”
