The American Jersey Cattle Association named Brent Rocha of R&R Dairy/Pacific Edge in Tillamook, Ore., as one of this year’s six Young Jersey Breeder Award winners. He was awarded by the association on June 18 at the 158th annual meeting in Springfield, Mo.
The Young Jersey Breeder Award is granted to individuals or couples who are between the ages of 28 and 40 on January 1 of their nomination year. The award recognizes the winners’ expertise in dairy farming, breeding Jersey cattle, participation in programs of the American Jersey Cattle Association and National All-Jersey Inc., and leadership in Jersey and other dairy and agriculture organizations.
Like many others, Rocha grew up surrounded by cattle. With his brother, Scott, he spent his years feeding calves, doing chores, and selecting cattle to exhibit at the Tillamook County Fair and the Western National Jersey Show.
Using the family’s herd, Rocha and his brother began making mating decisions in 2016. He had a vision for a healthy, productive cow. He reached for a cow with outstanding components, consistent breeding, and the balance and functionality that would last. He and his vision drive R&R Dairy and Pacific Edge’s breeding program today.
Rocha has an eye for potential. He can spot an exceptional cow and combines this skill with his knowledge of genetics and ability to embrace new ideas. He was a key player in enrolling the herd in REAP and participating in American Jersey Cattle Association programs. Every calf is registered, the herd participates in appraisals, and over 90 percent of first-lactation animals score Very Good because of him.
Pacific Edge is a respected breeding program in the Jersey industry with his guidance. The herd averages Very Good 85% across about 1,600 animals and has produced a large number of elite young cows, such as the 21 first-lactation animals that reached a maximum score of Very Good-89%.
Outside of shows, Rocha believes the best cattle combine profit, production, health, and longevity with quality that guides generations. The best evidence to this belief is Pacific Edge Premier Diva, Excellent-96%. “Diva” has earned several awards in the show ring while establishing herself as an influential brood cow, whose subsequent generations are impacting Jersey herds around the world.
The breeding program led by Rocha is recognizable throughout the industry. Pacific Edge has earned Premier Breeder honors at World Dairy Expo and the All American Jersey Show, exhibited National Jersey Jug Futurity winners, earned Reserve National Grand Champion honors, and developed several All American and Reserve All American cattle.
Rocha’s success is built on the hours he has spent observing, preparing, and working hard. He can often be found studying pedigrees, evaluating cattle, refining mating decisions, and searching for the next generation of great Jersey cows.
