The Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) has confirmed H5N1, the virus commonly known as bird flu, in two connected dairy herds in Newton County. These are Indiana’s first confirmed cases in dairy cattle.
What BOAH/USDA has shared
- The virus was detected through routine milk surveillance, with follow-up testing confirming H5N1 in two operationally connected dairies.
- At the time of BOAH’s update, no other Indiana dairy herds had tested positive. Routine surveillance continues.
- BOAH advises that all lactating dairy cows, including dairy-beef crosses, must have a negative H5N1 test before leaving Indiana. Contact your veterinarian and BOAH before arranging shipments. Farms that regularly ship lactating cows can also ask about the voluntary Dairy Herd Status Program.
What you can do on your farm
Review your biosecurity practices with your veterinarian and employees. Limit nonessential visitors, use dedicated boots and clothing, and follow cleaning and disinfection procedures for equipment and vehicles. Review precautions for anyone working across livestock operations, along with recommended protective equipment for employees.
What to say if someone asks
Keep your response simple and focused on what you know:
“Pasteurization heats milk to kill harmful germs, including the virus that causes bird flu. It’s a longstanding safeguard that helps keep the milk you buy safe for your family.”
You can also speak personally about your farm. If accurate, you might say:
“Keeping our cows and the people who care for them healthy is our priority. We’re working with our veterinarian and taking precautions to protect both.”
Direct questions about affected farms, testing or movement requirements to BOAH or forward to ADAI to help navigate.
