Three-term Congressman David Valadao (R-CA) was defeated in his bid for reelection from his central California district in Kings and Fresno counties. He was one of very few in Congress with an active affiliation with a dairy farm.
On election night, challenger T. J. Cox trailed by nearly 4400 votes but steadily gained ground as mail-in and other ballots went his way.
Democrats gained seven House seats in California and 40 nationwide in the mid-term elections.
