Connecting the dots between calf immunity, health & management

Join Dairy Calf & Heifer Association (DCHA) for its next webinar set for Oct. 12, at 2:00 p.m. Central time (U.S./Canada). Kelly Reed, Diamond V ruminant field technical specialist, will lead this free, one-hour educational offering.

This webinar is approved for 1 continuing education (CE) credit through Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE) for DCHA members.

During this webinar, Reed will introduce challenges of calf-specific management factors in providing environments for cattle to thrive. She will describe the anatomy associated with the calf’s gastrointestinal tract and the immune system and introduce the immune system’s three levels. Reed will address the unique aspects of newborn calf immunity. Additionally, the webinar will provide information regarding the management of dry cows and epigenetic effects on the unborn calf. Furthermore, Reed will review the importance of colostrum and duration of immunity. To conclude, she will share available science to guide vaccine protocols.

Reed earned her bachelor’s degree and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. In 2009, Reed joined DeRuyter Bros Dairy in Sunnyside, Wash., as the herd manager, and became the general manager in 2014. Along with her Diamond V work, Reed owns and serves as a veterinarian for Reed Dairy Veterinary Services, based in Prosser, Wash.
