New World Screwworm: Preparedness, Early Detection and Reporting

The New World screwworm is a dangerous pest that can affect livestock and any warm-blooded animal. Recently, NWS has had a resurgence in parts of Central America and Mexico. The United States has taken measures to prevent the spread of screwworm to its borders, but livestock producers should remain vigilant about monitoring for it.

Join NMPF and the National Dairy FARM Program for an informative one-hour webinar exploring the threat of New World screwworm. Experts will share the latest updates on the current outbreak, signs to watch for in your herd, and best practices for prevention and treatment. Participants will also learn the proper steps for reporting suspected cases to safeguard animal health and protect American livestock.

Dr. Tristan Colonius serves as the Chief Veterinary Officer and Deputy Director for Science Policy at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Before joining FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, he was Deputy Chief of Staff in the Immediate Office of the Commissioner, where he played a key role in redesigning the agency’s Human Foods Program. Earlier, he worked in the Office of Legislation as Legislative Director for Foods and Veterinary Medicine, acting as the Center’s primary liaison to Congress on related policy matters.

Dr. Rosemary Sifford serves as the Deputy Administrator of Veterinary Services and Chief Veterinary Officer for USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). She began her USDA career in 1997 as a Saul T. Wilson Scholar and has since held a wide range of leadership roles across Veterinary Services, Plant Protection and Quarantine, and Animal Care. With experience spanning both policy and operations, Dr. Sifford has served in field and management positions, most recently as the Associate Deputy Administrator for Animal Care.
