Free online episodes offer insights to help producers stay on top of industry news and insights

 

Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW), announces the line-up of speakers for week 76 of The Dairy Signal™. Episodes this week will provide timely insights on silage season results, achieving success in crossbreeding beef and a Dairy Innovation Hub update.

Dr. John Goeser, PhD, Director of Nutritional Research & Innovation at Rock River Lab, Inc., and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Dairy Science Department at University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Dr. Luiz Ferraretto, Assistant Professor and Ruminant Nutrition Extension Specialist, Department of Animal and Dairy Science and Division of Extension, UW-Madison, will provide insights on this season’s silage crop and tips for incorporating this crop into feeding programs.

Jerry Wulf, Manager and Partner, Riverview LLP Beef, Morris, Minn., and Kelli Retallick, President of Angus Genetics Incorporated, will share perspectives on the potential for crossbreeding with beef.

Dr. Tera Montgomery, Professor, Dairy and Animal Science and Campus Liaison Dairy Innovation Hub, UW-Platteville, and Troy Runge, Professor and Department Chair, Biological Systems Engineering and Campus Liaison Dairy Innovation Hub, UW-Madison, will provide an update on research funded by the Dairy Innovation Hub.

Developed by fellow dairy farmers from the PDPW Board of Directors, The Dairy Signal is a weekly series of free educational episodes offering insights and resources for fellow dairy farmers and other food system professionals throughout the value chain. The episodes air live from 12:00-1:00 PM CT each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; recorded sessions are available later in the day.

The Dairy Signal episode on Sept. 14 featured Cheryl Skjolaas, Senior Outreach Specialist with the University of Wisconsin Center for Agricultural Safety and Health, and Justin Wege, Ag Mechanics Instructor/Tractor Safety Program Lead, Department Chair for Ag Mechanics, Outdoor Power Equipment, and Farm Business Production Management, Fox Valley Technical College. They shared tips and reminders for equipment maintenance and preparation to stay safe during the busy fall harvest season.

Walt Moore, President/Owner, Walmoore Holsteins, Inc. and Moocha Milk Transportation, Inc., West Grove, Pennsylvania; Tony Brubaker, Partner, Brubaker Farms, Mount Joy, Pennsylvania; and Amanda Arata, General Manager, Kansas Dairy Development, Deerfield, Kansas participated in a panel discussion on Sept. 15.  They shared the considerations and decision factors involved in raising replacement heifers at home or at a custom operation, and how to effectively communicate expectations and performance about calf raising.

Dan Basse, Economist and President of AgResource Company, provided a bi-weekly update on Sept. 16 on dairy and agricultural market news including weather impact, exports and production trends.

Each live session offers attendees the opportunity to engage in open Q&A with the speakers through the interactive platform.

Tuesday, Sept. 21

Topic: In many areas of the state, corn silage is well underway or even complete. Hear a summary of how the season is wrapping up and glean tips on how best to incorporate this year’s crop into your feeding program.  Episode presenters include:

Topic:  Hear an update on the newest research and outreach funded by the Dairy Innovation Hub and their involvement with the upcoming Dairy Summit and Dairy Innovation Summit. Episode presenters include:
