What Does Health Care Planning Look Like in Farm Succession?

Center for Dairy Excellence

Dairy Farm Families Invited to Workshops on Nov. 18 and 20

Transitioning a farm to the next generation is more than a transfer of land and assets—it’s a shift in lifestyle, responsibilities, and personal needs. Among the most critical yet often overlooked aspects of this transition is health care planning. Both retiring and incoming farmers face distinct challenges in securing affordable, comprehensive health coverage.

As farmers retire, their health care needs typically increase, and their insurance options change. On the other hand, young farmers entering the business often lack access to employer-sponsored insurance and face financial constraints. For both generations, planning ahead, and knowing your options, can help avoid financial strain and allow you to integrate your health coverage into a successful farm succession plan.

To help you dive into health care options for both retiring and incoming farmers within your family business, Samantha Gehrett from Penn State Extension (who wrote the excerpt above) is leading a session alongside Paula Ledney called “Retirement Planning: What to Think About” at the “Passing the Torch” Transition Planning Workshops. These workshops are for dairy farm families on November 18 and 20. Samantha is one of seven speakers highlighted below who will speak at the workshops. Hosted by Penn State Extension and the Center for Dairy Excellence, we are keeping costs low for families. The day-long workshops are $25 for the first two family members and $5 for each additional family member, with lunch included. Keep reading for more details!
