Workshop on Methane, Dairies and Livestock, and Renewable Natural Gas in California

 

California law requires the reduction of methane emissions at California dairy and livestock operations to 40 percent below 2013 levels by 2030. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) will host a workshop to engage a broad spectrum of stakeholders on the unique policy and technical issues the dairy and livestock sector faces in achieving this and other statutory requirements. The workshop will include topic-specific panels with presentations from a broad spectrum of stakeholders and experts. The objective of the workshop is an enhanced understanding of California mandates for reductions in methane emissions, trends in the dairy and livestock industry, California programs that reduce dairy methane, environmental regulation affecting dairy operations including concerns raised about potential impacts associated with environmental policies and programs, and to hear stakeholder perspectives.

Background

Senate Bill (SB) 1383 (Lara, Chapter 395, Statutes of 2016) requires the reduction of short-lived climate pollutants from multiple sectors, including specific direction to reduce overall methane emissions by 40 percent below 2013 levels by 2030 and at dairy and livestock operations by the same percentage. To date, CARB and other State agencies have coordinated to implement legislative direction, engage stakeholders, and achieve the 2030 methane emissions reductions target.
