18 Active HPAI Control Zones in Lancaster & Dauphin Pennsylvania Counties

There continues to be an uptick in highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Pennsylvania-based poultry operations. There have not been any reported cases on Pennsylvania dairy farms. However, dairy farms that fall within the 3km (1.86 miles) Control Zone around affected poultry premises are required to conduct one round of testing.

Reminder: All processors and cooperatives receiving milk from PA farms should be continuing with bulk testing of milk for HPAI from Pennsylvania farms at the tanker truck level. No virus has been detected in Pennsylvania cattle, but the PA. Department of Agriculture has requested this as an added measure to prevent the spread of HPAI.

There are currently 18 active Control Zones across the following PA counties: 

• Lancaster County, PA
• Dauphin County, PA

What this means for dairy farmers in the nearby area: If a dairy is located within the 3km radius (Control Infected Zone) surrounding the affected flocks, one round of bulk tank milk testing is required. Producers should receive a call from someone at the PA Dept. of Agriculture if you fall within 3km (1.86 miles) of an infected poultry premises, and they will have you confirm if there is still dairy cattle on the premises. If a producer doesn’t receive a call, they can reach out to PDA at RA-ahds@pa.gov and they can confirm whether you are within that 3km Control Infected Zone. They can send you sampling supplies if needed.

How to tell if you’re in the Control Infected Zone: If your dairy is in the Control Infected Zone, the Department of Agriculture should be reaching out to you directly. However, you can check the HPAI tracker map (see map details below) to see if your dairy’s address falls within the 3km Control Infected Zone.

How the map works: When you look at the map, counties with detections are marked as red, orange signifies the control areas, and yellow represents the surveillance areas. When you enter your dairy farm’s address in the search bar, there will be a message that lets you know whether you’re required to test or not. If you are within 3km of the Control Infected Zone and are required to test, PDA has a surveillance team that will reach out to you directly. However, if you believe that your contact information with the state could be outdated, email RA-ahds@pa.gov.

My dairy farm is showing up in an Infected Zone. Now what? 

• When a positive case is identified, the PA State Vet’s Office will reach out directly to any dairy farms within the Control Infected Zones about testing.
• Each herd must have a USDA issued federal premises identification number registered with the Department. Any new farms can complete the attached premises registration form to obtain a premises ID number. Dairy premises can be reported to RA-PREMISE-ID@pa.gov.  A Premises ID will ensure they appear on the Department’s map so they can be alerted to new infected premises and any surveillance requirements.
• Per the Department’s response plan, dairies in the Control Infected Zone shall submit one round of bulk tank milk after a control area is opened.

• REMINDER: The PA Department of Agriculture encourages dairy producers to email their completed biosecurity plans to AG-bioplans@pa.gov for review.
