The federal order requires raw (unpasteurized) milk samples nationwide to be collected and shared with USDA for testing. This new guidance, which was developed with significant input from State, veterinary, and public health stakeholders, will facilitate comprehensive H5N1 surveillance of the Nation’s milk supply and dairy herds.
USDA previously issued an order in April 2024, that mandates testing prior to interstate movement of lactating dairy cattle and mandatory reporting of positive test results in livestock that the new order will supplement. Six states will be in the initial program rollout: CA, CO, MI, MS, OR, PA.
Ohio is expected to participate in the future, but a specific date has not been determined. The Ohio Department of Agriculture is working closely with USDA and the dairy industry to comply with the order and continue important work to remain disease free.
