Expo en Español Offers Practical Insights for Dairy Professionals

Expo en Español is World Dairy Expo’s educational program created specifically for Spanish-speaking professionals in the dairy industry. Presented entirely in Spanish, these seminars provide practical information and valuable tools for dairy owners, managers and mid-level managers.

Expo en Español sessions are held Tuesday through Friday during World Dairy Expo in Mendota 1 of the Exhibition Hall at 10:30 a.m. Each session concludes with an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and engage with the presenters.

Tuesday, September 29

“Five key strategies to improve your dairy farm profitability”

Presenter: Paulina Letelier, Consultant, GPS Dairy Consulting

Paulina Letelier will be sharing five practical strategies that dairy managers and herdsmen can implement to improve farm profitability. Topics will include ways to increase milk production, improve feed intake, identify unprofitable cows, and make better culling decisions to strengthen herd performance. The presentation is designed to provide practical, real-world examples that can be applied immediately on dairy farms.

Paulina earned her M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her expertise in dairy records analysis enables her to identify performance gaps and provide data-driven solutions to support herd performance. Paulina is fluent in Spanish and provides customized training for Hispanic dairy employees, including managers, feeders, and calf care teams, to facilitate communication, explain complex technical concepts, and improve labor efficiency.

“Prevention is Better Than Cure – Don’t Leave Mastitis to Chance”

Presenter: Carolina Pinzón, Dairy Outreach Specialist, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Division of Extension

Reducing the risk of mastitis in dairy herds is key to long-term farm success. This presentation provides a practical framework focused on proven, research-based strategies across key areas, including people, environment, milking routine, mastitis management, milking equipment, and herd health. Each area highlights simple practices to reduce bacterial exposure, support immune function, and maintain udder health. The goal is to help dairy teams stay aligned, consistent, and focused on what works to prevent mastitis.

Carolina Pinzón is the Bilingual Dairy Outreach Specialist at the University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and a master’s degree in Dairy Science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. With over two decades of experience in the dairy industry, Carolina has worked as a herd manager, milk quality research assistant, training specialist for a milking equipment manufacturer and a milk processor, and as an independent consultant. She is passionate about translating research into practical, high-quality outreach programs focused on milk quality and udder health.

“Making Future Cows Better with Today’s Data”

Presenter: João Dürr, CEO, Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding

The data that leads to better cows is collected every day on dairy farms across the country. Learn how information used for day-to-day management decisions – like illness reporting, hoof trimming, and animal ID – is applied to genetic evaluations and mating programs during this presentation. Recommendations for standardized data recording and how to include farm data in the National Cooperator Database will also be shared.

Born in Ibirubá, a small agricultural town in Southern Brazil, João Dürr, Ph.D., has served as CEO of Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB) in the U.S. since 2014. His previous roles as Executive Director of Interbull, President of the Brazilian Council of Milk Quality (CBQL), and Professor at Universidade de Passo Fundo in Brazil cultivated deep expertise in animal genetics, milk recording and analysis, and management and administration. CDCB serves as the national evaluation center in the United States and is the primary source of genetic insight included in bull proofs and female genomic results.

“The Diarrhea Dilemma: Practical Tips to Prevent and Treat Calf Scours”

Presenter: Dr. Kendra Wells, Veterinarian, Valley Veterinary Clinic

This presentation will cover the key management factors associated with calfhood diarrhea, including diagnosis, early intervention, supportive care, and appropriate antibiotic use. Practical strategies beginning in the maternity pen and extending through calf housing and feeding management will be discussed. Participants will also receive a refresher on team training, recognizing sick calves, and implementing effective treatment protocols.

Dr. Kendra Wells is an owner veterinarian at Valley Veterinary Clinic, a bovine-focused practice serving dairy producers throughout northeastern Wisconsin. She is passionate about calf health, maternity management, and helping dairy teams achieve success through practical education and hands-on training. Through her dairy industry experience and education, Dr. Wells became fluent in Spanish and enjoys working closely with both English- and Spanish-speaking farm employees. She is dedicated to mentoring others and providing tools and knowledge that improve animal health, employee development, and overall farm performance.
