Just like universities and colleges aren’t our average DFA farmer-owners, Adam Shetley, manager of Foremost Dairy, the research extension and education center that sits about 15 miles west of the Mizzou College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, isn’t an average dairy farmer either.
Adam never considered a career in dairying until — on a whim — he took an introductory animal science course at Foremost Dairy.
He was officially hooked on dairying. After college, he spent several years making what he calls a “figure eight” across the United States pursuing dairy opportunities and learning everything he could — from running his own small dairy, to managing several commercial herds, to two stints as a farmhand at Foremost Dairy, to running a start-up dairy in Oregon.
It was during his time in Oregon that Adam got news that would change his future — he applied and was hired as the new manager of Foremost Dairy, where it all started for him.
Adam’s passion for the dairy industry has led him to be involved in DFA’s Young Cooperator (YC) program, a program that focuses on personal and professional growth, learning the latest innovations in the industry and networking with peers across the Cooperative.
“I was not aware of all that DFA did aside from just selling our milk,” Adam says. “They really do so much to support the dairy farmer. I have learned so much through DFA YC. I will definitely continue to be an ambassador to other young farmers.”
