Don’t forget to sign up for free animal care workshops happening at a location near you this April!
What can you expect from the workshops? Hosted by the Center for Dairy Excellence, the Professional Dairy Managers of PA (PDMP), the PA Beef Council and Penn State Extension, the events will help you and your dairy team boost your skills and get certified in key animal welfare areas within the Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Program. A Spanish interpreter will be present at each event, making the workshops ideal for both English and Spanish-speaking employees.
During each workshop, you’ll move between the following sessions and gain training in several FARM animal welfare areas:
- Calf Care — Learn about various strategies for improving calf health, the benefits of feeding colostrum beyond the first feeding, considerations for pair housing calves and more.
- Lameness, Locomotion, Euthanasia and Fitness to Transport — Learn about the FARM locomotion scoring system, how fitness to transport affects culling decisions on dairy operations, and euthanasia protocols for dairy employees.
- Think Beef, Meat Quality Matters — Learn how to give shots in ways that will maximize beef quality and reduce risk condemnations on cattle.
- Animal Handling and Stockmanship – Learn how to more efficiently and patiently sort and move cattle using groups of heifers that are weaned up to six months old.
A certificate will also be provided to help those attending demonstrate compliance with the National FARM training requirements. Click here to view the full list of workshop dates and locations.
