Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW), announces the line-up of speakers for week 80 of The Dairy Signal™. Episodes this week will provide an update on dairy manufacturing and markets and recommendations for heifer management and hoof health.

Michael Dykes, DVM, President and CEO, International Dairy Foods Association, will share an update from the nation’s dairy manufacturing and marketing industry group.

Dr. Mike Overton, DVM, MPVM, Global Dairy Platform Lead, Zoetis Animal Health and Dr. Matt Akins, Associate Scientist and Extension Dairy Specialist, University of Wisconsin-Madison, will provide insights on selecting and raising heifers with a focus on enhancing profitability and productivity of the herd.

Dr. Gerard Cramer, DVM, DVSc, Associate Professor with the Department of Veterinary Population Medicine of the University of Minnesota, will highlight ways to use hoof health records to make decisions on your dairy.

Developed by fellow dairy farmers from the PDPW Board of Directors, The Dairy Signal is a weekly series of free educational episodes offering insights and resources for fellow dairy farmers and other food system professionals throughout the value chain. The episodes air live from 12:00-1:00 PM CT each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; recorded sessions are available later in the day.

The Oct. 12 episode of The Dairy Signal featured Angie Edge, Manager – Dairy Company Communications at Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin, with a review of consumer research and trends in cheese and other dairy snacks, and she shared ideas and recipes that are the perfect fit for busy fall schedules.

Dr. Theresa Ollivett, DVM, PhD, DACVIM (Large Animal), Assistant Professor in Food Animal Production Medicine section at UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, returned on Oct. 13 with housing, feeding and other calf care recommendations for keeping the youngest members of your herd healthy and preventing respiratory disease as temperatures begin to drop.

Ben Buckner, Chief Grains and Dairy Analyst at AgResource Company, returned on Oct. 14 for a bi-weekly update on dairy markets, feed outlook and export news.

Each live session offers attendees the opportunity to engage in open Q&A with the speakers through the interactive platform.

Tuesday, Oct. 19

Topic: The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA), represents the nation’s dairy manufacturing and marketing industry. Learn what IDFA has been involved with recently when it comes to trade and exports, nutrition, innovation and sustainability. Episode presenter includes:

Wednesday, Oct. 20

Topic:  How do you put a lifetime value on heifer quality? Learn the impact heifer selection can have on your culling decisions and how that can enhance profitability, get a handle on inventory management and hear practical ideas for pre-breeding growth targets and nutrition. Episode presenters include:

  • Dr. Mike Overton, DVM, MPVM, Global Dairy Platform Lead, Zoetis Animal Health
  • Dr. Matt Akins, Associate Scientist and Extension Dairy Specialist, UW-Madison

Thursday, Oct. 21

Topic:  Hear how you can use hoof trimming records to make informed decisions about your hoof health program to set trimming schedules and footbath programs. Episode presenter includes:

  • Dr. Gerard Cramer, DVM, DVSc, Associate Professor with the Department of Veterinary Population Medicine of the University of Minnesota
