DCHA Webinar: Calf Behavior Monitoring 101

Dairy Calf & Heifer Association

October 21

This webinar will provide an overview of how behavior-based monitoring technology supports calf health management from birth through the heifer development period. Participants will learn how behavior data can be used to manage individual animal health. Additionally, participants will gain practical insights on how to use this data to evaluate and practically manage young calf production systems to improve heifer-rearing systems.

3 learning objectives

  • Understand Monitoring Technology: Learn how ear-tag sensors track rumination, eating, and activity to calculate a daily health index for calves from birth through breeding age.
Recognize Management Transitions: Examine how behavior data shifts around key transition points, such as weaning and hutch exit, and how these patterns reveal gaps in a raising system.
  • Apply Outcome Data: Use herd-level data on morbidity, mortality, and average daily gain to evaluate the impact of monitoring on calf health and growth performance.
