DFBS Preliminary Progress Report #2

The second Dairy Farm Business Summary (DFBS) Preliminary Progress Report has been completed for 2021. This report includes 77 NY farms and is broken into three categories:

  • Average of all farms (77)
  • Farms less than 850 cows (38)
  • Farms greater than 849 cows (39)

Report highlights include:

  • Pounds of milk sold increased by 5 percent and net milk price increased 7 percent from $17.28 to $18.44 per cwt
  • Crop sales increased 181 percent, partly due to a 17 percent increase in hay dry matter (DM) tons per acre and a 5 percent increase in corn silage tons per acre. This is offset by an increase of 14 percent for fertilizer/lime and spray, and crop expenses, as well as a 26 percent increase in fuel, oil and grease expense.
  • Cows per worker increased 2.4 percent and milk sold per worker increased 4.8 percent. Hired labor costs per worker equivalent increased 6.7 percent increase.
