Financial Considerations for Farm Transitions

Center for Dairy Excellence

Dairy Farm Families Invited to Workshops on Nov. 18 and 20

Do you find yourself worrying about how to make the numbers work for a farm transition on your farm? Are you concerned if it is even possible?

Is the next generation really ready to take over the reins of running the operation? You might want to make it as easy as possible for the next generation to continue the farm, but you also need to have a plan for your own retirement without feeling like you are a burden to your family.

Maybe you have farmed with a sibling for decades but never really developed a plan for how somebody can get out of the business in an amicable and fair way – while still continuing the farm in your sibling’s family in the future.

Perhaps you’ve never really opened up the farm books to your family members and you are reluctant to do so because you are afraid of how they will respond.

Maybe you have a successful, valuable and profitable farm business that you want to transfer within the family, but you really don’t want to pay a penny more in taxes than is absolutely necessary in the process.

To help you navigate these complex financial considerations that are often part of the farm transition process, Dr. Brian Reed (a dairy farm consultant who wrote the excerpt above) is leading a session on this topic at the “Passing the Torch” Transition Planning WorkshopsThese workshops are for dairy farm families on November 18 and 20. Dr. Reed is one of seven speakers highlighted below who will speak at the workshops. Hosted by Penn State Extension and the Center for Dairy Excellence, we are keeping costs low for families. The day-long workshops are $25 for the first two family members and $5 for each additional family member, with lunch included.
