A truly one-of-a-kind collection of Holstein sale catalogs and historical memorabilia from the personal collection of Holstein legend Horace Backus will be offered in an online auction on November 28 – 29 and 30 via cowbuyer.com. During his career of more than 65 years as a leading sale manager and unrivaled pedigree expert, Horace Backus may have done more than any other single individual to add value to Registered Holsteins, to instill confidence in the auction sale market and to inspire Holstein breeders everywhere.
The Horace Backus Online Memorabilia Auction is being organized by David Rama of The Cattle Exchange, Delhi, N.Y. Rama worked side-by-side with Horace at sales for over 20 years, He has selected extremely rare items including Holstein sale catalogs dating back to the Erickson Dispersal in Wisconsin in 1924. Many of the catalogs are the ones used by Horace himself in the auction box and include his many handwritten notes and comments. Catalogs will be offered from famous sales such as Dunloggin, Osborndale and Carnation and more recently Tara Hills and Romandale. Herdbooks
Rama thanks Holstein veterans Wayne Conard, Patsy Gifford and Dick Witter for helping to catalog and organize the materials for this sale. The collection is vast, and more items will be offered in additional sales in the future, he says. Whether for a personal collection or a holiday gift, these priceless items must be considered by any Holstein enthusiast, Rama says.
In announcing the sale, Rama explained that proceeds will be used to support Horace who is recovering from a stroke suffered earlier this summer. He is in an extended care facility close to his son near Rochester, N.Y.
