According to the latest agriculture census data, the number of farms operating in the United States and the total farm acres have experienced significant declines. The 2022 Census of Agriculture reveals a staggering 141,733 fewer farms in 2022 compared to 2017, with the number of farm acres dropping to 880,100,848—a loss of over 20 million acres (about the area of South Carolina) in just five years.
This decline in farm numbers and acreage is alarming and indicative of our farmers’ challenges. Increased regulations, rising supply costs, labor shortages, and weather disasters have all contributed to squeezing farmers to the point where many find it economically unsustainable to continue farming.
Passing a new farm bill that addresses these challenges and includes a legislative fix to Prop. 12 is the best way to help create an environment that attracts new farmers and enables families to pass their farms to the next generation.
Please write to your lawmakers today and urge them to support the farm bill for its swift passage.
