The United States has not entered into a new trade agreement opening an overseas market to U.S. food and agricultural products in over a decade. This year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is forecasting that the U.S. will run a record $17 billion trade deficit as food and agricultural imports to the U.S. dramatically exceed our exports.
While our competitors and allies alike are negotiating new free trade deals that reduce harmful tariffs, the U.S. is standing on the sidelines. Since more than 20% of farm revenue in the U.S. comes from exports, standing still is falling behind. We need to tell Congress and the Biden Administration that it’s time to get back in the game and negotiate new trade deals for U.S. food and agriculture.
