Protect Dairy in SNAP – Contact Your State Legislators Today!

International Dairy Foods Association

Today, approximately 20 state legislatures are considering or proposing bills that would ask the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to restrict purchases of certain foods and beverages available to participants of the SNAP program in their states. If this authority (known as “waivers”) is granted by USDA, state governments will have the power to prohibit enrollees in SNAP from purchasing food and beverages using SNAP program benefits. We must ensure all dairy products are excluded from such restrictions.

Why This Matters:

  • Dairy is essential – 90% of Americans don’t get enough.
  • SNAP participants rely on dairy – 5 of the top 25 foods purchased with SNAP benefits are dairy products.
  • Dairy fuels strong bodies and minds – It provides high-quality protein, calcium, and vitamins that support overall health.

We need your help to ensure dairy remains accessible to all Americans. Ask your state legislators to include the following language in any SNAP-related bill: “No federal waiver request made to the U.S. Department of Agriculture shall seek authorization to prohibit the use of SNAP benefits for the purchase of any food or beverage that contains milk, milk products or milk proteins.”
