Calves fed waste milk from the lactating herd are likely regularly consuming antibiotic residues. Several studies show that feeding this milk over time can create antibiotic resistant bacteria in the calf.
It has been shown it is possible to reduce levels of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in calves through the feeding of natural Oregano essential oil. A study conducted at the University of Reading in England supplemented waste milk fed to dairy calves with Anpario’s Orego-Stim Liquid (a source of 100% natural oregano essential oil). In the feces of control calves, 44.1% of the E. coli present were resistant to the 4th generation cephalosporin antibiotic cefquinome. However, in calves fed waste milk supplemented with Orego-Stim Liquid, only 12.6% of E. coli were resistant. In addition, calves fed the natural oregano essential oil supplement shed Cryptosporidium in significantly lower amounts.
Orego-stim, a natural flavoring additive, has also been shown to support growth attributes as well. An independent trial at the Agrifood and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) in Northern Ireland fed calves Orego-Stim Liquid in reconstituted milk replacer. Calves that received Orego-Stim Liquid were 4.41 lb. heavier at weaning and nearly 6.6 lb. heavier at 70 days of age, a 6.8% greater average daily gain benefit over the control group. There were no scours in any of the calves, and in the control group four calves were treated for pneumonia.
