Rainey Rosemond Appointed as New Dairy Extension Educator in Berks County

Rainey Rosemond, from Hillsborough, NC, has been appointed by Penn State Extension to serve as a dairy extension educator in Berks County.  Rosemond recently completed a Master of Science Degree in Animal Biology from the

University of California, Davis.  Her thesis was titled, “Impacts of Feeding Monensin to High Producing Dairy Cattle fed a Contemporary California Diet” and was carried out on a commercial dairy farm near Hanford, CA. Project objectives were to determine the impacts of monensin on milk production and composition and dry matter intake. Additionally, this study aimed to provide new data on post absorptive efficiencies and impacts of monensin feeding on blood volatile fatty acids and amino acids. Along with her thesis work, Rosemond was part of a team assessing the quality and stability of compressed corn silage and alfalfa hay bales and of co-ensiled sugarbeet and almond hull silage. While a graduate student at the University of California, Davis, Rosemond served as a teaching assistant for educational courses focused on domestic animal production, reproduction, and lactation. Additionally, Rosemond assisted in a research trial with the Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank determining milk and meat residues with off-label drug use. Rosemond has a B.S. in Animal Science from Virginia Tech. During her time at Virginia Tech, she worked on several research teams studying feed additives and dietary effects on volatile fatty acid production, microbial communities, and epithelial function in dairy production.

Rosemond will join the Penn State Dairy Extension Team. This team provides dairy production and business management educational programs for the dairy industry. These programs and information are provided through meetings, webinars, and other virtual delivery methods, as well as individual, on-farm, assistance.  Dave Swartz, Assistant Director of Programs for Animal Systems with Penn State Extension, said, “We are excited to welcome Rainey Rosemond to the Penn State Extension Dairy Team.  Our dairy team members work with all segments of the dairy industry.  With Rainey’s extensive experience and training, she will be a great addition to the Extension team in Berks County and an asset to the dairy industry in Berks and surrounding counties.”
