Return-on-Investment of Targeted-Spraying Technology?

Consider participating in Penn State’s survey of See-and-Spray outcomes in 2025.

The Penn State Extension Weed Science program has received funding from the Pennsylvania Soybean Board to assess the return-on-investment (ROI) of See & Spray™ technology for grain producers within the Commonwealth. In 2025, we will be conducting demonstration and strip trials near State College.

We are also requesting early adopters of this technology to consider sharing their data so we can describe ROI trends for the benefit of producers, agronomists, and policymakers.

What is our ask?

We request that early adopters (1) designate the Penn State Extension team as “partners” in your farm’s John Deere Operations Center to allow access to See-and-Spray’s “As-Applied Maps” and field boundary data layers; and (2) contact (see below) our staff ahead (1–3 days) of primary POST applications in soybean where See-and-Spray will be utilized.

What will we do?

We will visit as many locations as possible following applications, and conduct within-field surveys to characterize the primary weed species targeted. At the conclusion of the 2025 production season, we will summarize shared data from across the state to relate return-on-investment (i.e., acres not sprayed) to various factors, including soil-residual PRE herbicide inputs (i.e., number of sites-of-action), driver weed species, targeted-spray application timing (no. of days after soybean planting), field size, the edge vs. interior ratio in each field, and soil management and crop yield data (if also shared).

Data sharing:

Our published report will be excluded to statewide summaries. No farm-specific data will be published.
