Traveling over 1,000 miles to run quality assurance on ice cream isn’t the ordinary intern experience—good thing our Tillamook interns are extraordinary. As a part of his internship, Linden Olmstead traveled to our Decatur site to get hands-on in the ice cream manufacturing process.
“As an intern in TCCA’s Quality department, my trip to the Decatur plant was a great reminder of the dynamic nature of manufacturing. In the classroom, many solutions are fixed and concrete. But in the field, adapting to the situation is crucial.
In the Decatur plant, Danton Batty and my manager Cassaundra Edwards showed me the ropes and encouraged me to give suggestions for process improvements. While we were working on ice cream variegator spin speeds, I made a speed suggestion to Heath Gammon based on an ice cream cutting. He immediately called it down to the operators to adjust in real time. That really exemplifies how quick things can move and change when real results are found.
After this trip, I’ve gained a newfound appreciation for all the hard work that our operators do to make our delicious Tillamook products. Seeing (and tasting) an even more delicious Coffee Almond Fudge ice cream after trialing our improvements was the greatest reward!”
