Whole Milk Update: Schools Making Decisions

American Dairy Association North East

As schools prepare for the upcoming school year, they will have the option to offer whole and/or 2% milk to students for both breakfast lunch! Many schools are still in the decision-making process regarding the types of milk they will offer. While districts have submitted their milk bid specifications, some are still awaiting responses and pricing information from milk processors and distributors.

ADA North East staff continue to offer educational whole milk resources to schools such as the “Whole Lotta Wholesome” program reminding them of the flexibility to serve ALL milk options.

It is important to note that just because whole or 2% milk has been included in the bid does not guarantee that it will be offered in the fall. Once districts receive their finalized bids responses, they will make their final decisions on the milk products they will serve during the 2026-27 school year.

Dairy farmers are encouraged to continue advocating for whole and 2% milk even though the students are out of school for the summer. Local advocacy and relationship-building matter. You can play an important role by sharing your experiences, discussing the nutritional value of dairy products, and reinforcing the importance of offering a variety of milk options to students. Building relationships with school boards and community leaders can help support future decision-making.
