Earlier this year, fourth-generation dairy farmer and DFA farmer-owner, William Walleser of Wall-Stone Holsteins in De Soto, Wisc., was named one of Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation’s 35 Under 35.
He was recognized for his leadership in conservation, innovation, and community, and was the top individual in the sustainable environment category.
“We’re not just doing this for us,” he says. “We’re doing it for whoever comes next.”
With a focus on sustainability, the family keeps their soil healthy by using regenerative farming practices like cover crops and no-till planting. They also invest in waterway restorations by supporting the Hill Country Watershed Alliance, a local organization that strives to improve and restore soil, water, and air in their community. William serves as a founding member and treasurer.
“The team at DFA plays a vital role in the way our farm operates and the success of our sustainability goals,” William says. “I’m very grateful to be a part of a Cooperative that allows us to create products that people enjoy.”
He says this recognition wouldn’t have been possible without the work of his family and the farm’s 25 employees.
“This award is shared with everyone on our team,” William says. “If we could put everyone’s name on it, it would make a lot more sense than just being mine. We achieved this because we have everyone seeing the same vision.”
He says he’s hopeful for the future of his farm and dairy farming in general.
“There’s a lot of noise out there about what farming should or shouldn’t be,” William says. “But the future is bright if we stay open, stay curious, and keep doing the work.”
