“I’m especially excited that we are featuring American cheeses for our cheese course, including Rogue River Blue, the champion of the 2019 World Cheese Awards,” First Lady Jill Biden said, in her announcement on November 30.
Fudgy and rich, Rogue River Blue was the first American cheese to win the honor of World Champion at the World Cheese Awards in 2019. It’s known for its flavors of pear brandy, truffle and fig, and the pear liqueur-soaked grape leave wrapping the wheels.
“We hope that President Biden, President Macron, their families and guests enjoy every bite and find that it lives up to its storied reputation as one of the world’s greatest cheeses,” said Marguerite Merritt, Rogue Creamery’s cheese emissary and marketing manager.
Rogue River Blue has made some notable appearances; it was sent to the White House for former President Obama’s Inaugural Ball in 2009, and again in 2013. Wheels have been sent to Queen Elizabeth II, as the team learned she was partial to the cheese.
Cypress Grove Humboldt Fog, a soft ripened goat cheese from California, and a cheddar by family-run Deer Creek Creamery in Sheboygan, Wisconsin are also being served.
