Zach was able to talk to some of the factors influencing the shift in milk pricing.”

- September’s total U.S. milk production was 18.210 billion pounds, down 0.2 percent from a year ago and 6,000 fewer head since August. Cow numbers are at their lowest level since January 2022, with the Southwest down significantly in cow numbers.
- Dairy product production in general was down in August, with butter production down 12.1 percent, cheese down 0.2 percent, and nonfat dry milk powder production down 15.2 percent, respectively, year over year.
- Exports remain challenged, with 1.509 billion metric tons of milk solids shipped overseas year-to-date through August 31, down 7 percent from a year ago.
- There have been 1.509 billion metric tons of milk solids shipped overseas through August 31, 2023, which is down 7 percent from year ago.
