Plan for long-term business viability
The Dairy Advancement Program (DAP) provides opportunities for New York farmers to address business needs necessary to meet the challenges of today’s marketplace and to better position themselves for long-term success. DAP is funded through the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The program is coordinated through Cornell CALS PRO-DAIRY and delivered to farms in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension and agriservice professionals.
Farms must have lactating dairy cattle and be shipping milk. Priority is given to small and midsize farms with projects that address specific business needs to meet the challenges of today and to position the farm for long-term viability. Funding covers up to 80 percent of eligible costs. The farm is responsible for the remaining 20 percent, as well as any amount exceeding the value of the award. Awarded funds are disbursed through Cornell University directly to the industry professional service provider.
1,050 dairy projects have been awarded funding since 2013 and $30 million has been reinvested in dairy production facilities because of these projects. Farm owners have used DAP funds to develop business plans that help them make sound business decisions. Some projects have included analyzing options to enhance profitability and modernize facilities, from replacing an aging parlor with robotics, to building a brand-new facility. Other projects have also explored diversification, transitioning management or joining forces with a new business partner.
