“Transition cow management: Solutions for dry matter intake to enhance health, cyclicity and reproduction,” presented in Spanish, headlines the Sept. 26 Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council (DCRC) webinar. The free webinar starts at 2 p.m. Central time (USA/Canada). Gustavo Schuenemann, Ohio State University professor and extension veterinarian – dairy, will serve as the instructor for this one-hour webinar.
During the webinar, Schuenemann will focus on “people and management” to increase dry matter intake (DMI) and enhance reproduction by improving cow comfort to enhance cow eating behavior; and overcoming physical barriers (e.g., linear bunk space, stocking density, calving rate, milking robots) with practical solutions to improve feed availability within the reach of animals. Avoiding a drop in DMI during the transition period is key to controlling excessive body condition loss and metabolic diseases in early lactation. Ultimately, this enhances resumption of cyclicity postpartum and reproductive performance (improving pregnancy and reducing abortion).

Schuenemann received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1998 from Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias, UNICEN in Tandil, Argentina. After working in private practice in Argentina for three years, he completed his master’s and PhD degrees at the University of Tennessee in 2004 and 2008, respectively. His research focuses on transition dairy cow and personnel management. He has been teaching students and professionals, and conducting research in dairy cattle health and welfare, reproduction, nutrition and management since 2004.
