These incidences trigger Indiana’s Board of Animal Health to issue control and surveillance protocols for dairy herds within a 20 km zone around these infected flocks. Surveillance zones now include portions of Adams, Allen, Dekalb, Jay and Randolph counties.
Beyond the detections in domestic poultry, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has confirmed HPAI in wild birds in Gibson County and is investigating suspected cases of bird deaths in Allen, Benton, Hamilton, Lake, LaPorte, Newton, Pike, Porter, Starke, Tippecanoe and Vermillion counties in recent weeks.
The H5N1 virus is circulating in the environment and is likely to be active through spring wild bird migration.
