Important Information for World Dairy Expo Exhibitors

If you’re heading to World Dairy Expo to exhibit cattle, please see the attached notice for PA exhibitors as well as the partially pre-filled submission form. Read a summary below.

Prior to the exhibition, cattle must meet import requirements for the state of Wisconsin and all entry requirements for the show, including testing for influenza for lactating dairy cows. The World Dairy Expo has previously issued guidelines for exhibitors, which are attached here. The three Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory locations can facilitate testing in collaboration with your accredited veterinarian prior to the show.

Lactating dairy cows returning from the show must meet Pennsylvania’s influenza testing requirements prior to return:

• All lactating dairy cattle are required to receive a negative test for Influenza A virus on a milk sample at a NAHLN laboratory within the 7 days prior to the date of entry. If Pennsylvania exhibitors are not able to travel to the World Dairy Expo, exhibit, and return to PA within 7 days of initial testing, they will need to retest prior to returning to PA. Exhibitors will be responsible for collecting milk samples and transporting them to the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Lab for testing. Samples must be tested within 7 days of reentry to Pennsylvania.
  • Samples must be delivered to the lab by 10 am to receive results by 5 pm the same day. The lab is open Monday through Friday. No weekend testing is available.
  • No movement of lactating dairy cattle is permitted without negative test results.
• The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture is providing a partially pre-filled milk sample submission form for the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. See attached. Exhibitors are responsible for completing the owner and veterinarian information prior to submission. For the purposes of this test, the address and premises ID for the World Dairy Expo are used, but owners should fill in their name, farm name, phone, email, and date of sample collection to receive results.

• The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture can provide sample collection tubes upon request to Pennsylvania exhibitors. Anyone interested should contact their regional veterinarian or the Harrisburg office at (717)-772-2852.
• Milk samples must be collected from individual cows and represent all four udder quarters. 3-10 ml should be submitted in a sterile 12 ml collection tube. Do not pool samples from multiple cows. Samples can be collected by the owner; however, the veterinarian with whom the owner has a valid veterinary-client-patient-relationship must provide a signature on the laboratory submission form. World Dairy Expo veterinarians will not be available to facilitate testing for movement. Owners should discuss testing needs with their veterinarian in advance.
• The laboratory test report shall accompany the shipment and shall be retained by the destination for 3 months. Test results must be “negative” or “not detected” for influenza A.
