On March 25, a Milk Producers Council (MPC) delegation spent a full day in Sacramento advocating on behalf of dairy communities and the broader agricultural industry. MPC Board Members Rochelle De Groot and Jeff Troost joined MPC General Manager Kevin Abernathy, MPC Regulatory and Economic Affairs Director Geoff Vanden Heuvel, and MPC legislative advocate Glenn Farrel for a busy day of legislative briefings and meetings. The focus was on outreach to legislators in leadership roles in the Assembly and Senate Agriculture Committees, the Assembly Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee, the Senate Environmental Quality Committee, and with legislators representing the San Joaquin Valley.
The briefings focused on providing an overview of MPC activities and engagement, advocating in support of the broader agricultural community’s pursuit of substantial funding from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund for a number of key agricultural and dairy incentive programs, allocating Proposition 4 bond funding for SGMA implementation projects, and sharing MPC’s perspective on the need for a tangible funding solution to address much-needed and urgent state and federal water conveyance subsidence repairs. Importantly, the Sacramento Advocacy Day served as a relationship-building opportunity from which to build for future MPC requests, needs, and interests.
