The American Jersey Cattle Association named Neal Frerichs of Frerichs Dairy Inc., LaGrange, Texas, as one of six recipients of the 2026 Young Jersey Breeder Award. He was honored June 18 during the 158th Annual Meeting of the association in Springfield, Mo.
The Young Jersey Breeder Award is presented to individuals or couples between the ages of 28 and 40 on January 1 of their nomination year. The award recognizes expertise in dairy farming and breeding Jersey cattle, participation in programs of the American Jersey Cattle Association and National All-Jersey Inc., and leadership in Jersey, dairy and agricultural organizations.
Growing up at Frerichs Dairy, Neal was deeply involved in the family operation. He was active in 4-H, exhibited Jersey cattle and became an enthusiastic ambassador for youth participation in agriculture. His encouragement helped other young people become involved and strengthened local Jersey programs. His leadership was recognized with the Gold Star Award, the highest honor presented by Texas 4-H at the county level.
After high school, Frerichs attended Texas A&M University, earning degrees in Dairy Science and Wildlife and Fisheries Science. He was active in the Dairy Science Club, dairy judging and Dairy Challenge, developing knowledge and skills that prepared him for a career in agriculture.
The value-added enterprise complemented the family’s growing agritourism and direct-to-consumer businesses and helped position Frerichs Dairy for the future.
A few years later, Neal and his wife, Kayla, moved to the Texas Panhandle while she pursued her veterinary degree. There, Neal worked for Dairy Foundation and gained experience across a large, multi-site dairy operation. From managing youngstock and irrigation systems to working with crops, beef cattle and grazing programs, he embraced opportunities to broaden his understanding of dairy and agricultural management.
In 2025, Neal and Kayla returned to LaGrange, bringing those experiences and ideas back to the family business.
Today, Neal helps manage a diversified agricultural operation encompassing Registered Jersey cattle, beef cattle, sheep, hogs, direct-to-consumer food sales, agritourism and wildlife management. Frerichs Dairy incorporates intensive grazing, no-till cropping practices and innovative marketing strategies while maintaining a focus on animal care and sustainability.
His role within the operation is equally diverse. Whether working with the Jersey herd, managing wildlife programs, assisting customers in the farm store or planning for future growth, Neal has demonstrated a willingness to take on whatever responsibility is needed to move the family business forward.
For Neal, however, those plans continue to start with the Jersey cow.
“As long as we continue to have happy Jerseys, we will have happy customers,” he said.
That philosophy reflects the connection between the animals, the products they produce and the consumers Frerichs Dairy serves—a connection that began for Neal with a Jersey calf more than three decades ago and continues to guide his vision for the future.
The American Jersey Cattle Association was organized in 1868 to improve and promote the Jersey breed. Since 1957, National All-Jersey Inc. has served Jersey owners by promoting the increased production and sale of Jersey milk and milk products.
