NMC webinar addresses mastitis treatment options

Presentation will focus on using anti-inflammatory drugs for severe mastitis

National Mastitis Council’s (NMC) Sept. 27 webinar, led by Lowell T. Midla with Merck Animal Health, features “A brief review of the evidence for using anti-inflammatory drugs in the treatment of mastitis.” This free, one-hour educational offering starts at 2 p.m. Central time (USA/Canada).

For veterinarians using anti-inflammatory drugs in treatment protocols for severe mastitis, this webinar will examine evidence to support this practice. Additionally, Midla will provide new insights on the “why” underlying the “what,” regarding use of anti-inflammatory drugs to treat severe mastitis. Attendees will also learn about a new NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) solution for control of fever associated with acute mastitis in lactating dairy cows.

By attending this webinar, participants will understand:

• What are NSAIDs?
• How do NSAIDs work?
• Should severe mastitis be treated with glucocorticoids?
• Should severe mastitis be treated with NSAIDs?
• Should non-severe mastitis be treated with anti-inflammatories?
• The use of flunixin meglumine and the new label for Banamine Transdermal (flunixin transdermal solution) for control of fever associated with acute mastitis in lactating dairy cows.

Midla graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1992. Following two years in private veterinary practice in southeastern Pennsylvania, he pursued a residency in food animal medicine and surgery, while simultaneously earning a master’s degree at The Ohio State University. His master’s degree research evaluated the effect of biotin on subclinical laminitis in dairy cows. After another five years of private practice, he returned to Ohio State and spent 15 years practicing and teaching at their ambulatory clinic in Marysville, Ohio. For Merck Animal Health, he works with dairy veterinarians and producers to address a variety of herd health concerns, including mastitis prevention and treatment.
