The experts at Eurofins and IDFA recently presented a webinar on PFAS in dairy, where they discussed navigating sampling and analytical techniques. During this presentation, we reviewed what is used for testing today-from standard methods to user-defined techniques, as well as guidance and researcher studies addressing the concerns around sample collection protocols. We also reviewed what is unique about a laboratory report for PFAS analysis using methods that many data users may not be as familiar with.

Why is testing important?

PFAS is short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that since the 1940s, this large class of chemicals has been manufactured for a variety of industries globally, including industrial applications and firefighting. Everyday items that may contain PFAS include food packaging, stain repellent, waterproofing products, electronics, and non-stick pans.

PFAS have extreme chemical stability, which is why they are so useful. However, these chemicals are very resistant to degradation and can persist in the environment, according to the U.S. National Science Foundation. PFAS stability means they persist and accumulate in various agricultural soils, water, and living organisms. Research suggests that the effects of PFAS can lead to adverse health outcomes.

Monitoring and PFAS testing are critical. While challenging, there are a variety of approaches to treat PFAS contamination. These include incineration, biological technologies, chemical catalysis technologies, photolytic technologies, and physical treatment technologies.
