UW-Madison Extension to offer solar contract seminars for Wisconsin farmers

University of Wisconsin-Madison

UW-Madison Division of Extension and the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation will host two seminars on solar contracts in August 2024.

  • August 20, 2024, 7–8:30 pm: AgCountry Farm Credit, 1207 N Central Ave, Marshfield, WI
  • August 21, 2024, 7–8:30 pm: Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation, 1241 John Q Hammons Dr., Ste 201, Madison, WI

Wisconsin has 33 large-scale solar developments (13 with battery storage) in place or under development in 21 of its 72 counties. Developers are approaching farmers and rural landowners to secure land leases or options to purchase, yet many landowners are unsure what to ask or expect in the contracting process.

“We’re pleased to offer research-based information and tools for Wisconsin farmers and landowners to make an informed decision related to large-scale solar,” says Kelly T. Wilfert, attorney and Farm Law Outreach Specialist with Extension’s Farm Management Program.

Wilfert and Bill Oemichen, another attorney and Professor of Practice-Law with Extension’s Local Government Education Program, will discuss risks and opportunities in solar contracts, common terminology, and other considerations for those individuals contemplating a solar contract. Sherrie Gruder, LEED AP, Distinguished Sustainable Design & Energy Specialist with Extension, will also highlight the current state of solar energy in Wisconsin during the seminar.

These workshops are part of a statewide Extension program to engage Wisconsin communities on large-scale renewable energy development and storage, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy Renewable Energy Siting through Technical Engagement and Planning (R-STEP) program.

Register to attend at go.wisc.edu/ExtSolarBasics. Advanced registration is preferred. Farm Bureau membership not required. Walk-ins welcome, subject to space constraints.
