The Penn State Berkey Creamery will kick off Homecoming Week with the launch of Throwback Scoops, a new program that will take customers on a trip down memory lane by bringing back retired flavors that helped pave the way.

The first flavor to make a return to the scooping lineup is “Golden Chocolate Pecan.” This flavor was last offered in 2017 and will make a return to the University Park campus beginning Sept. 21.

Golden Chocolate Pecan is chocolate ice cream with pecan halves and salty caramel swirl. The flavor will be available in the Creamery only, in cones or bowls, for as long as supplies last.

Additional past flavors will be revived after the current flavor is gone.

“These throwback flavors are a one-time limited production run,” said Doug Thomas, operations manager for the Creamery. “Our hope is to continue reviving old flavors throughout the year. Be sure to visit the Creamery to find out about the latest throwback flavor on the menu.”

The Creamery is a staple within Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences and the University, dating back to 1865, only 10 years following the start of Penn State.

“The tradition of the Creamery is an iconic part of Penn State, and we’re excited to bring retired flavor favorites back for an encore,” Thomas said. “There’s a nostalgia associated with our products, and we look forward to bringing a familiar taste back to life.”

As many as 150 flavors are believed to have been scooped from the Creamery in past years, with 70 flavors still in production. Throwback Scoops flavors will not be available in packaged containers or over the internet, although most current products can be purchased in this manner.

Berkey Creamery is the largest university creamery in the United States, producing ice cream, cheese, milk, yogurt and sour cream, as well as a variety of other products, such as juices, lemonade and iced teas, made for sale and distribution to the University community.

Cows from Penn State’s dairy herd provide milk for the Creamery’s fresh dairy products, averaging about four days from cow to Creamery treat. For more information, visit creamery.psu.edu.
